The Story That Moved Us Most – Gooby Challenge Rescue Spotlight
Illustration of Marcus found on the road with a shattered hip and broken leg

We found Marcus in the middle of the road — two months after he had been hit by a car. He had survived an entire winter on the streets with a shattered hip and a broken leg.

Photo of Marcus, a scruffy golden-haired terrier, resting on a couch and gazing out a sunlit window. Handwritten text reads: Rescued Dogs Don't Just Heal, They Heal You Too! and Marcus found his forever home with Cherie.

After his amputation, we learned he also had epilepsy. Most people saw a complicated rescue dog with too many medical issues — a dog they believed would be better off euthanized than living as an amputee with seizures.

I saw my son – Marcus loved unconditionally
Marcus was an old soul in a little terrier body

Marcus was an old soul in a little terrier body. Loud environments and stress would trigger seizures, so I changed my entire life to keep his world peaceful and calm. No chaos. No crowds. No constant visitors.

Breezy car rides through the country, routines, soft blankets, and safety became our life together.

Every accommodation in our home was for Marcus. Throw rugs covered the floors so he would have traction. The top corner of my bed became his special place, padded and protected so if he had a seizure, I would know immediately and he would not hit the wall or fall. Our entire home was built around keeping him safe, calm, and comfortable.

And in return, Marcus loved me with everything he had.

My favorite video of him is one I captured coming home from work before I changed to WFH due to his safety.

He's standing on the sofa looking out the window waiting for my car to pull into the driveway. The second he sees me, he gets so excited he balances up for a moment on his one back leg and starts pawing at the window with both front paws. You can hear his little nails going "click click, click click" against the glass because he cannot contain his excitement that I'm home.

Reflection on what the video of Marcus means

That video means everything to me because when we first rescued Marcus, he had given up. He was just a shell of a dog. But once his amputation was behind him, he was ready to live again. That missing leg never stopped him. Dog parks, beach days, car rides, long walks — Marcus wanted to experience every beautiful part of life he almost never got to have.

That dog survived trauma, amputation, seizures, fear, and severe pain… and still chose love every single day.

People think rescuers save dogs. But sometimes a dog comes along and completely changes your heart, your priorities, and your entire life for the better.

Marcus was never a burden – he was the best thing that ever happened to me
