Ask A Vet #2

Raw Meat, Dental Health & Reverse Sneezing

It's time for another "Ask A Vet!" We asked a veterinarian your burning questions - from the safety of consuming raw meat to reverse sneezing.

Here are Dr. C's answers to your questions:

Q: What can you do to help alleviate seasonal dry skin in dogs?

For seasonal dry skin, consider adding a high-quality omega-3 fatty acid supplement to your dog’s diet; fish oil can be particularly effective for improving skin health. You can also try using a gentle, moisturizing dog shampoo (with ingredients like oatmeal or aloe) and limiting bath frequency, as over-bathing can strip natural oils. Using a humidifier indoors during dry seasons can also help. If dryness persists, consult your veterinarian, as some skin conditions might require prescription products.

Q: Can my dog eat raw meat?

Feeding raw meat to dogs is a controversial topic among veterinarians. While some dogs thrive on raw diets, raw meat carries risks, including bacterial contamination (like Salmonella and E. coli), which can affect both your dog and people in the home. If you choose to feed raw, consult a veterinary nutritionist to ensure the diet is balanced and follow strict hygiene practices. Alternatively, you might consider lightly cooking the meat to reduce bacteria while preserving some nutritional benefits.

Q: My dog keeps eating grass. Is that normal?

Many dogs eat grass, and while it’s not fully understood, it’s generally considered normal. Some dogs may eat grass to help with digestive upset, while others may simply enjoy the taste or texture. If your dog eats grass occasionally and doesn’t vomit or show signs of illness afterward, it’s usually harmless. However, if this behavior is excessive or if your dog seems unwell, it’s worth discussing with your vet.

Q: What are some product suggestions for maintaining healthy canine teeth when the canine hates getting his teeth brushed?

If your dog dislikes tooth brushing, you can use dental treats, chews, and water additives formulated to reduce plaque and tartar. Look for products approved by the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) for effectiveness. Dental wipes can also be easier to use than a brush and still provide some plaque removal. Dental toys, such as rubber chew toys with ridges, may also aid in maintaining dental health, but be cautious of overly hard materials that could damage teeth.

Q: What is reverse sneezing?

Reverse sneezing is common in dogs and happens when the dog quickly inhales through the nose, causing a snorting sound. This occurs due to an irritation in the throat or nasal passages, often from excitement, allergies, or environmental triggers. While it sounds alarming, it’s usually harmless and resolves on its own. You can try gently massaging your dog’s throat or briefly covering their nostrils to encourage swallowing, which may stop the episode. If reverse sneezing becomes frequent or severe, consult your veterinarian to rule out underlying issues.

Q: How can I help a middle-aged dog cope with increased alone time?

To help a middle-aged dog adjust to more alone time, establish a routine that includes exercise, mental stimulation, and quality time with you. Puzzle toys, treat-dispensing toys, or safe chew toys can keep them occupied while you're away. Consider using calming products like pheromone diffusers or anxiety wraps if they show signs of stress. Gradually increase the time they spend alone to help them adjust, and if possible, have someone visit or check on them during the day.

And that's it!
