Why Do We Have Pets? 💙🐕
As dog lovers, it's second nature to see a dog and immediately think of them as a beloved pet.
But where did this relationship between humans and dogs come from? 🤔
In today's blog, we'll be talking about the HISTORY of our relationship with dogs and some of the BENEFITS of having a four legged companion.
THE HISTORY 🕵️♀️
Researchers believe that humans started domesticating dogs around 15,000 years ago.
As our ancestors transitioned from hunter-gatherers to settled communities, dogs played integral roles in hunting, guarding, and companionship.
We started to see a transition from viewing dogs as tools for hunting, to viewing them as companions. In ancient civilizations - including the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans - dogs were revered for their loyalty and companionship and often depicted in art and mythology.
The Renaissance further solidified the status of dogs as beloved companions, with artists like Leonardo da Vinci, portraying them in paintings alongside their human counterparts.
Over time, selective breeding and close proximity to humans led to the diverse array of dog breeds we know today, and strengthened the bond between humans and dogs.
Dogs are no longer seen solely as working animals, but as integral members of families worldwide.
They provide emotional support, unconditional love, and companionship to millions of people around the world.
WHY ARE DOGS CONSIDERED "MAN'S BEST FRIEND?" 👯♂️
Dogs have long been dubbed "man's best friend," and for good reason. Their qualities as pets are unmatched; they're loyal, sociable, emotional and adaptable.
Dogs have an unwavering devotion to their owners, and that devotion creates a bond that is enduring and profound. Dogs are known to eagerly greet you at the door, or offer a comforting presence in the midst of difficulty. They just seem to know when we're happy, sad, or in need.
Dogs offer emotional support and companionship in ways that are difficult to quantify.
Moreover, dogs are highly social animals, making them excellent companions for individuals and families alike. They thrive on interaction and are always ready to join in on activities, whether it's a walk in the park, a game of fetch, or simply lounging on the couch together. They are incredibly adaptable and can fit seamlessly into a variety of lifestyles and living situations.
THE BENEFITS OF HAVING A DOG 🥰
IMPROVED MENTAL HEALTH
Pets have been shown to improve one's mental health. They provide unconditional love and emotional support, which can reduce feelings like loneliness and depression. Interacting with animals boosts levels of serotonin and dopamine, leading to feelings of happiness and relaxation.
ENHANCED PHYSICAL HEALTH
Pets require regular exercise, such as walking or playing, and that will require you to be active as well. Regular exercise contributes to lower blood pressure, reduced risk of obesity, and improved cardiovascular health. Petting animals has also been shown to lower cortisol levels - reducing stress and promoting relaxation.
SOCIAL CATALYSTS
Pets serve as social catalysts - facilitating interactions and forging connections among individuals. Dog owners will often engage in conversations with fellow dog owners during walks or at a dog park, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie. Owning a pet can also help alleviate social anxiety by encouraging individuals to go outside more and participate in dog related activities.
COMPANIONSHIP AND EMOTIONAL SUPPORT
Pets provide unwavering companionship and empathy, offering a comforting presence during times of grief, stress or trauma. The non-judgmental nature of animals creates a safe space for emotional expression and vulnerability. For example, therapy animals play a vital role in providing comfort and support to individuals in hospitals, nursing homes, and other care facilities.
PROMOTING A SENSE OF PURPOSE
Caring for a pet instills a sense of responsibility and accountability, promoting personal growth and development. Pets need a daily routine and structure, helping individuals to stick to a routine and manage their time effectively. Having the responsibility of another being relying on you, can give you a sense of purpose.
And that's it!
From ancient times, dogs have been our loyal partners - offering protection, assistance and companionship. Today, they continue to enrich our lives with their unconditional love, bringing joy, laughter, and comfort to our homes.
